The fence that has been in place since 2019, from Steinfort to the A6, along the Belgian border, to prevent the spread of swine fever in the Grand Duchy will be dismantled, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg announced on Friday.

Following the favourable evolution of African swine fever (ASF) in Belgium, which has been officially recognised as free of the disease since 21 December 2020 and where the disease is therefore considered to have been eradicated, Minister Claude Haagen of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development has decided to close the 15 km of fencing installed to prevent the introduction of the ASF virus into the national wild boar population, removed.
The work started on Thursday 7 April. The dismantling of the fence on Luxembourg territory is being carried out in close cooperation with the Belgian and French authorities, who are also in the process of organising this dismantling.
This cross-border cooperation, which was set up as soon as the case of swine fever was detected in Belgium in September 2018, helped to prevent the introduction of the ASF virus into French and Luxembourg territory.
