Cesky Fousek (FCI 245)

Naming

  • ‘Cesky’ indicates he is from the Czech Republic;
  • ‘Fousek’ (is Czech for beard) indicates the distinct characteristics of the breed: highly developed beard and eyebrows;

Appearance

The Cesky Fousek is a medium sized wirehaired continental upright hunting dog with innate characteristics for field, forest, and water work. This allows the dog to be versatile in hunting. In short: an all-rounder that works both before and after the shot.
Despite his innate passion for predatory game, he is easy to train and lead. The Fousek is very attached to its master and very affectionate towards its family. It is a noble dog with a gentle and friendly expression, but its overall appearance betrays agility and decisiveness.
Originally, the Cesky Fousek is a hard-working hunting dog. His qualities are still widely used in the country of origin. There, he has been one of the most widely used upright hunting dogs for decades. Hunters especially appreciate its versatility and good handling.
Once at home with its owner, its calm nature comes to the fore, and from a passionate hunter with a lot of will to please, the Fousek turns into a quiet dog that easily adapts to the rules of the family. The Fousek will bark at danger but is not really watchful. Visitors are received with friendliness.
The Fousek needs a daily dose of exercise. But mental stimulation in the form of training and social contact is also very important for the Fousek.
The Fousek is a gentle dog, and should therefore be corrected with a “gentle” hand. He does need a consistent and persuasive owner. An “iron fist in a velvet glove” is sometimes said. The Cesky Fousek needs clear rules and consistent handling without physical heavy-handedness.He is a hard worker and is hard on himself. Driven by hunting passion, he takes on thorn bushes and cold water without hesitation and can, seemingly tirelessly, hunt all day long.
Also loud noises and a lot of crowds do not upset him thanks to his stable character.

Character

  • soft dog
  • easy to train;
  • highly employable: Fieldwork, retrieval, Sweatwork;
  • affectionate;
  • peaceful
  • not a real watchdog;
  • need for movement;

Small Munsterlander – Heidewachtel (FCI 102)

History:

At the beginning of this century, the Small Munsterlander or Heidewachtel was bred from old battles of small long-haired Standing Dogs in Westphalia, Germany. It is related to the French Epagneuls and the Drentsche Patrijshond. The breed appears in numerous paintings by Old Masters. Edmund Loins, a Westphalian gamekeeper, revived the breed in the second half of the last century. The purpose of breeding this breed was to achieve a versatile working dog. The Heidewachtel works, in hunter terms, both before and after the shot. The dog looks for game by searching a field with its head held high until it is blown away, after which it comes to a stand. When the hunter has shot, the dog looks for the game and retrieves it neatly. The Heidewachtel is thus bred as an all-round hunting dog, loved by connoisseurs for his perseverance and intelligence. In practice, he can successfully compete with other hunting dog breeds such as the Retriever and the English Standing Hunting Dogs.
