Hunting – Hunting Environment

All about hunting environment.

Hunting Environment

The actual hunting environment consists of the following, necessary, elements

Huntsman

The organizer of the hunting day.

Respect is the order of the day here: consolidate your invitation, and do not cancel (if so, notify in time to be able to provide a possible replacement.

Be on time, and bring a gift for the host.

Also visit the Jachtmeester (secretary, maitre de battue) to pay the costs of the chapeau.

Fellow hunters

Usually a reception or breakfast is provided before the hunting day starts. This is also the opportunity to greet other hunters briefly.

Etiquette during hunting is complex and mainly stems from the Safe Handling of Weapons, see the Practical Preparation. Of course, you learn the most by experiencing a Hunting Day a few times as a visitor or driver before you actually go hunting.

Special Field Officer

Most special constable is charged with guarding the hunting rights of the Hunting Rights Holder. The Special Constable has received special training in the Police School and is vested in the capacity of judicial police officer.
Basic training special constable

In principle, the special constable is not a hunter or fisherman. He is forbidden to do so in the areas where he is appointed. The special constable must protect the interests of his appointers and he must bring the crimes he establishes to the attention of the public prosecutor.

Usually the Special Constable or Guard leads the organization of the hunting day and is usually also the head of the Drijvers.

Change of status of Special Constable.

The Ministerial Decree (MD) of 10 July 2019 implementing the Royal Decree of 10 September 2017 regulating the status of special constables, was published in the Belgian Official Gazette on 23 July 2019

Floats

The floats or trackers try to bump into the game by hitting trees or on the ground, or by shouting startle sounds. Usually they also have the help of their hunting dog for this.

Hunting dogs

A Hunter without a Dog is a sucker

  • Game is almost impossible to find in a vast revier, without a dog
  • Impossible to find dead or sick-shot game in cover
  • A dog is an invaluable source of hunter’s joy

Here on jachtexamen.be we also give the opportunity to follow a free online course, hunting dogs.

Non-hunters

These are mainly the landowners and tenants, but also any passers-by.

Here, your behavior is simple. For these outsiders, who do not participate in the hunt, leave all contact to the Huntman or Guard. They know the local situation best and know how to deal with it.

Hunting regulations

Most hunting groups have some kind of rules, usually around shooting pheasant hens or game that is shot too close.
We also found this good saying.

– Hens that you shoot, they don’t lay in the spring
