Prepare for the exam

Hunting training

Everything about the Hunting Training also on the separate partner site – Jachtexamen.be

Hunting is more than a sport or activity. It is a passion and way of life.
But before you can start, you need a number of things

Hunting leave

The first requirement is to obtain a Hunting Permit.

Hunting Exam

To do this, you must pass a Theoretical and Practical exam, organized by the Nature and Forest Agency (ANB). These exams are organized once a year: theory in April, practice at the end of August.
More info on the site of the ANB.

Hunting training

Already at the start of the hunting site, a few years ago, there was immediate attention for the Aspiring Hunters.
At first only with the question modules, later also with summaries and additional exam aid. Given the size of this part of the site and also the technical impact (600,000 questions resolved), it was already decided to place this separately.
But especially the demand from the students, especially self-study, to provide a separate course made us take the step to this new project.

This Hunting Exam Preparation does exactly what it stands for: preparing the Aspirant Hunter for the official Hunting Exam. And it does so not only by imparting the necessary knowledge, but also by providing an appropriate curriculum, a follow-up of progress, regular testing of knowledge and certainly also by teaching the specific exam situation.

Equipment

When you have your hunting permit in your hands, you need a piece of equipment. With some appropriate clothing, rain boots or sturdy shoes, a waterproof jacket and hearing protection (!) you can go a long way. For hunting small game you still need a shotgun, for hunting big game a pellet gun.

Hunt

Hunting in Flanders is done through an unofficial system of invitations. To be allowed to hunt someone’s revier, you have to be invited. During the training, especially the practical lessons, you can get to know hunters. Be sure to keep an eye on our website. A lot of activities are organized here.

If you are handy, you can help a hunter in his/her territory and thus expand your hunting circle.

If you really know what you are looking for, you can join a hunting group as a partner or – if you have sufficient financial resources and time – start your own hunting area.

The costs

Every hobby is expensive, and this is also the case with hunting. Take into account fixed costs (hunting insurance, annual hunting leave) and variable costs such as clothing, ammunition and contributions for your hunting days. A one-time “heavy” cost is the rifle, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to obtain high-quality material.

Below you will find a rough estimate of some costs

Start

  • Equipment: 250 euros,
  • Rifle: from 1295 euros.

Education

  • Theory – Training: 145 euros
  • Theory – Exam – ANB: 70 euros
  • Practice – Training: 50 euros
  • Practice – Practice: between 500 and 1,000 euros
  • Practice – Exam – ANB: 180 euros

Hunting area

As a huntsman of your own hunting area of about 1,000 hectares with both small game and big game, you are still looking at a cost of about 100,000 euros per year. You can possibly reduce this cost by participating in a number of partners.

Fellow hunter

Fellow hunter (partenaire) within a hunting area depends on the size of the area and its location:

  • Small game – 250 Ha: 1,000 euros,
  • Small game – 1,000 Ha: 3,000 euros,
  • Small and Big Game – 1,000 Ha: 8,000 euros.

Annual costs

  • Hunting leave Flanders: 150 euros,
  • Insurance: 50 euros,
  • Chapeau: 50 euros (per hunting day).
