Opening hours:

Opening hours for regular hunting
Art. 3. Hunting of big game is open during the following periods:
1° for wild boar: from 1 January to 14 July and from 1 August to 31 December;
2° for roe deer and fawn : from 1 January to 31 March;
3° for roebuck : from 1 May to 14 September;
4° for red deer, fallow deer and mouflon: from 1 October to 31 December.
For the year 2013, the periods referred to in points 1° and 3° of the first paragraph shall start
from the day on which this decree is published in the Belgian Official Gazette. […] (BVR 8

Art. 4. § 1. Small game hunting is open during the following periods:1° for partridge : from 15 September to 14 November; (special conditions via the counting protocol WBE)2° for hare: from 15 October to 31 December;3° for pheasants: from 15 October to 31 December;4° for pheasant : from 15 October to 31 January.§ 2. The hunt referred to in paragraph 1, 1°, is […] (BVR 25 April 2014) is only open to recognised
wildlife management units.

Art. 5. Waterfowl hunting is open during the following periods:
1° for greylag goose : from 15 August to 30 September;
2° for Canada goose : from 15 August to 31 March;
3° for mallard: from 15 August to 31 January.
Art. 6. The hunt for other game is open during the following periods:
1° for rabbit : from 15 August to 28 or 29 February;
2° for wood pigeon: from 15 September to 28 or 29 February;
3° for fox: from 15 October to 28 or 29 February;
4° for feral cats: from 1 January to 31 December.
For the year 2013, the period referred to in point 4° of the first paragraph shall start from the day

In Wallonia there are still 5-yearly opening hours. These were recently re-established for the period 2016-2021.

Hunting Game Evolution

An evolution of the Huntable Game from 1960 to the present.

With some special observations:

  • Before 2000 no difference between hunting and other forms (Special hunting, control)
  • Until the 80s still National matter, Ministry of Agriculture
  • Only from the early 90s five-yearly decisions, previously rather per year and per species
  • In the past, waterfowl only distinguish between “ducks and teals” and “other waterfowl”
  • With a number of species that were forbidden to hunt at all times
  • In the Hunting Season 66-67 only small male Black Grouse can be hunted
  • Particularly difficult to identify during hunting: the species of quail, thrush, …
