Dear Andrzej Duda
I understand that the Polish parliament have proposed new hunting legislation that forbids anyone under the age of 18 to participate in hunting activities.
Obviously, a majority in the Polish parliament consider the exposure to hunting to be bad for children. It makes me incredibly sad that anyone objects to the most natural, healthy and animal friendly way there is to harvest meat for the household. It makes me even sadder that these anti-hunters feel so strongly about this, that they are willing to interfere with the parental rights of people thinking differently.
I am a hunter. I involve my children in hunting. It gives them a lot of knowledge about nature and a deep understanding of life and death. It is good for their mental and physical development. It teaches them responsibility. I consider it very healthy in the broadest sense of the word. I also think that it is my fundamental RIGHT as a parent to educate my children according to my own beliefs.
Allow me to quote a few words about parental rights concerning the education of children from the European Convention on Human Rights:
“the State shall respect the right of parents to ensure such education and teaching in conformity with their own religious and philosophical convictions.”
It is a deeply rooted philosophical conviction of every hunter I know, that hunting is fundamentally good. It our chosen way of life to participate in nature as hunters and obviously we want to pass that philosophy on to our children. I believe that the legislation Poland is considering is a clear violation of human rights.
I hope you will send this proposed law back to parliament for some serious reconsideration.
