May 15, an ordinary day like any other you would say. But for the Die-Heart hunter, now is the time to get out there. Not to shoot a buck but to fight the fox and thus create a better future for the small game. He has not stolen the proverb “as smart as a fox”. The fox is difficult to surprise. But most lawns have had their first cuts, making them easier to see. There are always edges that have not been mowed, Reynearde likes to pass by.

In any case, May 15, 2020 was already very special for me. But I didn’t know that that morning. On the way to the high seat, there were already some deer laveiving. Dozens of minutes passed but the red skirt was nowhere to be seen. Seven o’clock had already passed and the hope of the meeting began to disappear. Yet you stare through those binoculars for a few minutes to hope to catch a glimpse somewhere. Until suddenly I saw something jumping in the high grass from the back of the meadow, at a good 700 meters. It went so fast that I could hardly see what it was. A few seconds later, something jumped up in the grass again, slightly brown. At first I thought it was a hare. But when the headline appeared, I knew for sure. There he was, he had kept his appointment after all. Only the distance was a bit too big for me. But coincidence strikes and the fox came right up to me. Very leisurely until he decided to make a 90-degree angle at 300 meters and walk towards the forest. Immediately I grabbed my self-made fox bait whistle and tried to lure it back shorter. That went successfully, he changed his mind and came back to me. With the rifle at the ready, the meters between us became smaller and smaller. Until I decided to turn off the light at 156 meters. Nothing was going to happen, so he had to lie on the spot.

After the well-known smoke break of about 10 minutes, which I don’t only apply to big game, I went to take a look. How difficult it is to orient yourself in that tall grass. I searched behind him for fifteen minutes. More than 3 times I had passed him, as if he had been hiding. What struck me was that I was not the only one who had taken a life. The fox could have stretched a vole, but unfortunately was also interested in my hare complainer.

More happened that day, but I’ll tell you about that another time…
