The dead wolf was found next to the N719 on the border of Meeuwen (Oudsbergen) and Peer. At first it was said that it was a female, but after investigation it turned out to be a male.
Yentl Nijs of the Nature Center: “It is a very beautiful animal, already quite large. The cubs are still inexperienced, especially in traffic, so unfortunately it has now been hit by a car. They don’t know how to react to traffic, often make the wrong decision and then jump in front of a car.”
Michel Broeckmans is a forester at the military domain of Houthalen-Helchteren and monitors the wolves in North Limburg: “We try to monitor exactly where the wolves hang out on a daily basis on the basis of paw prints, turds and the wildlife camera network. ” As a forester they are a bit like my children, they are born, you follow that up and you look forward to the puppies. You love them.”
The death this morning of one of five cubs is therefore hard. “It’s a shame but you know it can happen. Last year, the first was killed on the road on 9 October, and the second on 19 October. And this one on November 16, which is almost a month later. That hurts.”
