The number of students following the hunting course is growing. Whereas in recent years an average of nine hundred people participated in the course, the course was fully booked last year with 1,150 participants. This is reported by the Royal Hunters’ Association.

More than a thousand hunting students went on three legally required practical parts of the hunting exam last week: hail shooting, bullet shooting and hunting practice. To be able to hunt in the Netherlands, the hunting diploma is a legal requirement.

The percentage of young people under the age of 36 who follow hunting training has fluctuated around 50 percent for about sixteen years. The 2004-2005 academic year had 377 young people, last season 625 young people took part in the training.

Director Willem Schimmelpenninck van der Oije of the Royal Hunters’ Association thinks it is good to see that many young people have registered again. ‘We also see in the membership of the Hunters’ Association that the association is rejuvenating. We are very pleased with the growing interest in hunting and wildlife management in the Netherlands. Hunters are volunteers who make an important contribution to the landscape.’
