African swine fever
Decision of the strategic committee to resume the destruction of wild boars in the PPA zone from 11 January 2021.
What do we find?
Despite the fact that we have been declared free of the virus and despite the fact that a lot of time and resources have gone into trying to eliminate all wild boars within a certain period, quite a few wild boars have still been identified in larger groups. This means that there is still a risk of the disease reappearing. This is because we don’t know enough about it yet. Keeping the density of wild boars low within this zone was therefore considered essential. This even with a virus free declaration.
So what is going to happen?
- Resuming night hunting and sharpening trapping cages.
- Two patrols per week will be sent out in the cantonments of Arlon and Neufchâteau.
- The interventions will take place between Monday and Friday, from 18h00 to 04h00.
- In the infectée zone, patrols will check the meadows, farmland and forests for wild boars.
- In the observation zone, only agricultural land is patrolled.
- In the vigilance zone, only agricultural land is patrolled.
- In all zones, the trapping cages will be used where groups of 3 or more wild boars are seen together more often.
- Continue to analyze shot, captured and found (dead everies)
- Checking the fence around the affected area
The purpose of all this?
To ensure that African Swine Fever in Belgium is a thing of the past. Belgium remains one of the only countries after the Czech Republic that has finally been able to stop the virus. This is thanks to good cooperation between all actors involved and thanks to the knowledge that other countries have gained in the meantime.
