Brevet Traqueur 2025

Drive hunting, safety and animal welfare

The first step of this project was a brainstorming session with 12 foresters, head floats and line leaders, together with a team from the RSHCB, led by one of its managers, Professor Jean-Marie Giffroy. Together they thought about the content of the course and the organization of this training.

Objectives

The purpose of this training is to better inform floaters about their role in drive hunts and to ensure the safety of both themselves and their dogs. In addition, the place of drive hunts in the hunting world is being considered, with the aim of greater recognition of floats and better acceptance of this form of hunting by the general public.

The Brevet Traqueur is intended to broaden the knowledge of anyone interested in drive hunts. That is why it is not only accessible to floaters, but also to hunters, forest rangers and other motivated participants. No prior knowledge is required. Although candidates with practical experience may feel more comfortable, this training is open to all interested parties, including those who have never participated in a drive hunt before.

Special attention is paid to the welfare of animals, both wild and dog, which are indispensable service animals in hunting. This theme is covered in several lessons: minimizing disturbance in wildlife, quick and painless handling of injured game, the selection and training of herding dogs, nutrition and prevention of medical problems in dogs, Aujeszky’s disease, and first aid in case of accidents with dogs.

12 hours course

The training consists of two teaching days, followed by a knowledge test. The education system is similar to that of the Public Health and Hygiene courses or the Fauna Management & Field Game Certificate (Brevet Petit Gibier). The course is based on a very extensive and standardized syllabus, which participants can fall back on. Each chapter includes a multiple-choice questionnaire, which allows candidates to see which topics are considered important and allows them to practice for the test.

The oral lessons, supported by a PowerPoint presentation, do not necessarily cover the entire content of the syllabus. This provides an opportunity to delve deeper into important topics and answer questions. The main purpose of the knowledge test is to evaluate the candidates and consists of a multiple-choice questionnaire, in which no points are deducted for incorrect answers. Two-thirds of the questions come from the syllabus’s multiple-choice questionnaire.
