Damage caused by the wolf can be compensated under certain conditions, according to the SPW.

Several sheep were attacked by wolves in early February in herds in Hampteau and Marcourt, two villages in the province of Luxembourg that are only a few kilometers apart. The first results of the DNA analyses following these attacks have shown that five sheep in Marcourt and two in Hampteau were killed by a “wolf of German-Polish origin”, the Service public de Wallonia announced in a press release on Wednesday.

Following these three attacks, a team from the Walloon network of wolves, which includes representatives from different sectors and aims to collect observational data, went to the scene to identify the traces left by the predator, take samples and carry out DNA analyses to determine whether they were attacks by wolves or by other animals.

The owners of the sheep have been informed of the results. Damage caused by the wolf can be compensated under certain conditions, according to the SPW.

Deadly wolf attacks on sheep remain marginal, as the SPW notes. “Since 2017, in Wallonia, of the 183 animals that were fatally attacked, only 23 have been attributed with certainty to wolves, while 80 were victims of dogs. »
