DILSEN-STOKKEM –Not the mayor of Maaseik, but a hunter has finally found the remains of Jürgen Conings in the Dilserbos, on the border of Dilsen-Stokkem and Maasmechelen. The man had observed a scent during a bike ride in the forest on Sunday morning, and had returned later in the day to look for the source of the smell. Then he hit the body.
Leonard ‘Nard’ Houben said he had observed a smell in the Dilserbos on Sunday morning around 9.30 am during a ride with his electric mountain bike. Shortly before noon, the man went back to look in the area to see if it was not a shot wild boar or deer. At first he did not find the source of the smell, but when he saw police officers in the distance – who had arrived at the scene after a phone call from Maaseik’s mayor Johan Tollenaere, who had passed by in the same place an hour after Houben in the morning and had observed the same smell – and walked towards them, he bumped into a tree on Conings’ body. “Suddenly I trip over that boy’s foot. That’s how I found him by chance,” said Houben
According to the hunter, it was “a person with a beard, who wore black clothing”. Furthermore, according to the years, Conings had a riot gun, a handgun 5.7, an axe, a pocket knife, and ammunition. “I regret that I had to find the person involved in this way. I would have preferred to find him alive and well. It’s a shame for his family.” The man also made a video of Conings’ body. “I have images of it,” said Houben.
