Fox Hunting

In England you have 2 important hunting dates.
The Glorious Twelfth (12 August) for the Grouse – see our separate Grouse page.
And tomorrow, Boxing Day (2nd Christmas Day) for the Fox Hunting.
Actually, it is no longer allowed since 8 years now, Hunting. In other words, chasing game with dogs and on horseback (where Shooting is used for our hunting for the foot or posted). But now the dogs hunt on a scent trail that was previously drawn through the hunting field. But, given the rich tradition, the strong proponents, but especially the support of entire village communities, this form of hunting is not immediately subdued. Employment with its variety of tasks (grooms, puppy walkers, whippers-in, young masters, veterans of the field, terrier men and stablegirls) also plays a role here. The numbers are impressive: there are still 400 active “Hunts” groups and about a quarter of a million people will attend a Hunt on Boxing Day with more than 45,000 riders on horseback.Since the ban on live Fox Hunting, several lawsuits have been filed with varying degrees of success for the proponents and opponents. Like last year a remarkable ruling by a judge (Tim Pattinson). While condemning the Hunt and the Huntsman to “mild” sums, he expressed his indignation in no uncertain terms for the astronomical sums that the opponents had used to bring the case to trial. There is talk of 326,000 pounds or 400,000 euros. The judge found that community money, mainly based on gifts, could be better spent.Tomorrow a lot of tradition and hunting joy on that crazy island not far from here. Weidmannsheil.
