Deadly rutting season: Early Birds

In the autumn it is rutting season for the red deer on the Veluwe. The testosterone level of the males rises and therefore the red deer also change their appearance. They become more muscular, the throat pouch becomes larger and longer hairs appear around the neck. In addition, the red deer takes a mud bath and urinates himself, all to impress the doe.
