Aquatic game – Moorhen

All about the moorhen.

Moorhen

Class: aves
Order: gruiformes
Family: rallidae
Species: gallinula chloropus

The moorhen has a distinct barge shape, flies up water kicking and swims underwater. It can walk, fly and climb a lot ! It is very sensible and knows how to take advantage of all circumstances to survive. A lesser flyer, it only moves sight at night to avoid being beaten by birds of prey. The young from the previous nest help the chicks from the next nest find food because mother may already be brooding on a third nest. Moorhens fall prey to a lot of predators and only high fecundity helps sustain the species.
