The music of the hunt, the rabbit hunt… I like to hear everyone say: “It used to be full of rabbits here, where have they gone”? Due to, among other things, the imported disease Myxomatosis to Europe plus additional new diseases, the rabbit population in Flanders has decreased considerably. However, there are still many places in Flanders where they still thrive, mostly sandy soil, roadsides, slopes against motorways and golf courses. Port areas, industrial estates and cemeteries are also popular.
The official opening time for the rabbit in Flanders is from 15 August to 28 February.
There are several methods available for rabbit hunting:
1. The hunt with ferret and leading guns (Max 2 to 3).
2. The hunt with pouch and ferret that the rabbit is caught by means of neatly placed on the other pipes (no guns are used here).
3. Small plots that are cordoned off by guns and expelled.
4. Hunting with the bird of prey and ferret.
*The Dachsund can also be used for rabbit hunting.
