French actress Brigitte Bardot fined after insulting hunters' association
The French actress Brigitte Bardot was sentenced on Tuesday to a fine of 5,000 euros for insulting chairman Willy Schraen of the French national hunters’ association, reports the public radio station France Bleu. The 86-year-old Bardot had expressed himself badly in a blog post on the website of her foundation.
The animal activist called the hunters “inferior men with drunken faces”. She also wrote that hunters “carry the genes of cruel barbarians, originating from our primitive ancestors”. Schraen was called a “predator with a big face full of smugness” in the post. The French Public Prosecutor’s Office had demanded a fine of 6,000 euros.
Prior to the trial, Bardot admitted that she had used “a little harsh words”. The actress often does not shy away from harsh words. In 2019, for example, she wrote an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron. In it, she said that French people are “disgusted” that Macron does nothing for animal rights. She called an alleged lack of policies around these rights “an insult” and “an unbearable disregard for the struggle I have led for 47 years”.
