The Research Institute for Nature and Forest<\/em> (INBO) recently published new figures on damage to agricultural crops caused by game. It shows that 2024 was a record year<\/strong> for damage caused by wild boars. In total, more than 2,000 claims<\/strong> were reported, the vast majority of which concerned agricultural plots. <\/p>\n

Most reports came from the province of Limburg<\/strong>, where the wild boar population is the largest. Rooting damage to grasslands<\/g> and damage to maize plots<\/g> were particularly common. This damage entails considerable costs for farmers, but also for hunters and managers who are responsible for managing the population. <\/p>\n

Although farmers can apply for compensation, many find this difficult due to the strict conditions and administrative burden. Agricultural organizations are therefore calling for a more flexible scheme and better support for affected companies. <\/p>\n

To limit the damage, efforts are being made to intensify wildlife management<\/strong>, including targeted hunting and new tools. Pilot projects show that a well-thought-out approach can greatly reduce the number of claims. <\/p>\n
